Relic Hunting April was a good month for metal detecting. Two good sites were opened up in Fairfax, Va. One was an ammo dump in Centreville where I dug about 140 bullets and the eagle plate. The the rest of this stuff came out of "Camp Measles" near Bull Run. The pictures show a bayonet, gun hammer, and Hotchkiss shell, a shoulder scale or epaulette, a brass bullet extractor and a Carcano bullet, and a Stephen Douglass token. The shell says "Hotchkiss" on the bottom. The last two pictures are new. I was back in "Measles" again to see if there was anything left. I found a work crew digging a hole for a tank. I checked the dirt pile and got a couple of .58 three ringers then a .69. Then I got a big signal and it was 1/2 of a freshly broken epaulette. I dug the dirt pile almost down to the ground but I never found the other half. I could see a fire pit in the side of the tank hole and that's where I picked up the good epaulette. It was over three feet down. The other items that I found that day are a bayonet socket, gun band, '59 eagle cent, New York button, and a Smith Carbine bullet.Click here for more pictures. |
